Shell - Modern Techniques
Designed by Marco Sousa Santos, the Shell chair is inspired both by formal and structural biological references. The structure appears to be a shell natural development and its form evolves like a natural body composed by vertebra and spine, working as natural force and weight distribution.
An array of wooden pieces disperse into a cocoon shape, supported by organically emerging legs. Designed in the tradition of Portuguese Lounge Chair, the ribs are intended to hold pillows and cushions which would adjust to any body shape while allowing each user to personalize their own small sanctuary.
A chair that arises in the logic of the process of taking the material, and trying out various technological solutions. Ergonomically, the Shell itself is a “pillow container” where it can be adjusted or filled with less or more pillows. The chair is delivered with 4 long pillows.
Made in Birch plywood with with CNC digital milling, each piece is then hand assembled by Mr. Castro, a traditional carpenter and artisan. A collaboration between nature and technology, the Shell is born through an incorporation of both modern and traditional techniques.
As Marco Sousa Santos explains the goal is to unite “Portuguese craftsmanship traditions with contemporary aesthetics (…) to reignite the bygone era when products were developed with patience, expertise, knowledge and integrity, aiming to truly reach the level of a high-end international product brand.”
A great piece of lounging furniture and a perfect contemporary addition to any space decor, the Shell is the iconic handmade Portuguese Lounge Chair.
